Mimi Ould Baba, a Malian national, allegedly played a central role in attacks that targeted Westerners in Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire in early 2016. Al Qaeda and al-Murabitoun, an Al Qaeda affiliate in Africa, claimed responsibility for the attacks. One American, Michael Riddering, who was in charge of an orphanage and a women's crisis center in Burkina Faso, was killed. Baba is currently being held by Malian authorities.
