Maria Bell, a 53-year-old U.S. Army veteran, was arrested on the day she had tickets to travel to Turkey. She was allegedly planning to meet Abdullah Flayes, a fighter with Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, a successor organization to Nusra Front in Syria. Bell allegedly sent Flayes $3,150 in 18 installments. Bell cited her Amy experience when allegedly providing guidance on operational security, firearms purchases, and military tactics. In text messages obtained by the FBI, Bell professed her love for Flayes. "I have put you ahead of my own needs and have endangered my finances to assist you," she wrote in one message.
